Jason Elam Retiring as a Bronco Could Mean More than Meets the Eye

It’s always nice to see the NFL actually doing something right.
It all started, although could have gone further, with the changes to the overtime rules at the owners’ meetings not too long ago. Now, the Denver Broncos, who have been less than impressive when it comes to player relations the past few years, decided they would have Jason Elam retire as a Bronco.
Today, the man who owns the fifth spot on the all-time scoring list will sign a one-day deal and finish his unbelievably successful NFL career in the same place he made his home for 15 years. After only playing part of last season with the Atlanta Falcons, Elam was unable or unwilling to find a new team to compete for and decided to call it quits and gets to do so for a team that gave him the two shiny rings on his right hand.
This is a refreshing act, though not uncommon in the least, for an NFL that seems to have forgotten about the men who pay for their extravagant boxes, fast jets and cars, Cuban cigars dipped in $100-a-bottle brandy and pretty young wives. And if you don’t agree, talk to a few restricted free agents and you’ll see.
The NFL brass has not proved they are willing to listen to their meal tickets because most of them made their ridiculous fortunes with other businesses that can be controlled with harsh tactics and replacement workers. Unless we want the 2011 season to look like a bad Gene Hackman movie playing on cable, more than a rule change and a photo-op of someone holding up a jersey needs to be done.
The NFL doesn’t appreciate its players, period.
But today homage will be given to one of the best kickers of time. Not only in spirit and intelligence, as Elam has established himself as an articulate author but let’s not forget he holds the record for the longest kick ever made. He split the yellow poles in Denver on Oct. 28, 1998 from an amazing 63-yards away. Impressive huh, Adam Vinatieri?
So impressive Elam will be joining men like John Elway, Gary Zimmerman, Tom Jackson and others in the coveted Ring of Fame circling INVESCO Stadium. And in five years maybe he’ll have the chance to put on gold jacket and join Elway in the Hall, but lets not get ahead of ourselves quite yet.
The point is, while Denver treats some of its players like day-care children and seems to have no interest in keeping the best offensive weapons they’ve had since Rod Smith was in his prime, they are trying to do one thing right by one former Bronco. Lets just hope this little gesture of player and organization politeness can spread and after next season we wont see a Keanu Reeves type character playing QB for the Patriots. Personally, I’d like to keep my excuse not to go to the in-laws’ on Sundays.
