2009 FIFA Confederation Cup: U.S. moving on with unlikeliest of scenarios to face Spain

The U.S. looked downright outmatched in Group play after two matches in the 2009 Confederation Cup, but they came on out top in Game 3 to move on.

The U.S. had all but packed their bags for a return to the States, but in a situation in which many things had to go their way, they pulled off a great moment in team history.

How the United States was to advance was really quite straight forward, but involved many variables. First things first, the U.S. had to defeat Egypt on Father’s Day Sunday by three or more goals. Second, Brazil had to beat Italy on Sunday by a combined three or more goals.

Reason being was that both Italy and Egypt entered the final game of Group B play with three points while the U.S. team had been blanked after a drubbing from Italy and Brazil. The last tiebreaker was goals scored to determine which team would move on with powerhouse Brazil.

The U.S. came out storming versus Egypt and was really in control of a game that had much to play for on both sides. Egypt showed a lot of promise during Game 1 as they nearly forced a 3-3 tie versus Brazil and took down the world champion Italians 1-0. The U.S. made Egypt look like the weakest team in the Group B much to the accordance of many pundits pre-rankings. If it weren’t for a missed hand ball call on the goal line versus Egypt, the U.S. very well should have won 4-0 in convincing fashion but the three goals was all they needed as Tim Howard recorded his first shutout of the Cup.

Brazil had already locked up its journey to the next round but looked to determine to play at full throttle versus Italy. The Italians were leading Egypt in goal differential and only really needed to score a goal or two to ensure their passage onto the next round. Unfortunately for the Italians, they never struck the back of the Brazilian net and watched the stadium scoreboard in agony as they went down 3-0 and the U.S. went up 3-0.

The final tiebreaker of it all came against Italy who the U.S. had been able to take a 1-0 halftime lead against. The Italians were unable to muster any goals against a Egypt squad that was unable to do the same and only held a total of three goals for the tournament. The final tiebreaker was goals scored, a category which the U.S. outscored Italy 4-3.

In a chance of all chances, the U.S. is moving on despite playing uninspired football versus a dominant Brazilian team which proceeded the first time the national team had lost in International play after leading at the half versus Italy.

The U.S. will face Spain in their next contest which is a tough match-up to say the least. They are 0-3 versus the Spaniards all time. Spain has won 15 straight in International play and is the only team yet to allow a goal in this year’s Confederation Cup. The odds are stacked even greater against the U.S. this go around, but they have just proven that impossible does not exist when there is a possibility.
