For the preseason, the NFL has 11 games that will be televised nationally. The games will have all 12 playoff teams from the 2008 postseason.
Among those 11 game to be televised nationally is the game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Super Bowl champions the Pittsburgh Steelers; a rematch of Super Bowl XLIII. The game will be on ESPN on Aug. 3 at Raymond James Stadium. This would be six months after the Super Bowl.
The game is an obvious choice even for a preseason game, because Super Bowl XLIII was one of the most exciting of all time, going down to pretty much the last play as Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s pass into the endzone was caught by his wide receiver Santonio Holmes.
The NFL this upcoming season will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the American Football League. The Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans – formerly Houston Oilers - were two teams that played in the inaugural AFL season in 1960.
This preseason, the NFL has scheduled for both teams to play each other as they kick off the preseason in Canton, Ohio in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. That game will be on NBC on Aug. 9. The weekend will also include the induction of Bills founder and owner Ralph Wilson into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Some might think preseason in the NFL is another opportunity for a major player to get hurt. We’ve seen players miss an entire season due to an injury from preseason, but it still is a good time for some football as fans will still throng to the stadiums.
Also the NFL will keep fans waiting a little bit longer for the regular season schedule as fans wait to plan their schedule around it.
