Mike Holmgren agrees to deal to become Cleveland Browns presidentSubmitted by admin on December 21, 2009 - 6:27pm |
Mike Holmgren will be joining the Cleveland Browns after agreeing to become the team’s president.
"We are pleased to announce that Mike Holmgren has agreed to join the Cleveland Browns," owner Randy Lerner said in a statement. "We will spend the rest of the week finalizing the details of the agreement."
Holmgren, 61, turned down an offer on Saturday to join the Seattle Seahawks in a front-office position. With the announcement of Holmgren joining the organization, head coach Eric Mangini’s job could be in jeopardy. Although Mangini has stated that he is not worried about being fired.
"I'm really focused on the group and getting them ready to play," Mangini said. "As far as a timeline or any of the other things, it's not what I'm doing or concentrating on. It's not what the coaches are concentrating on and not what the players are concentrating on. "What I'm looking to do is coach the team. That's it."
After last season, Holmgren stepped down as the coach of the Seahawks in order to spend more time with his family, but even with his new position, Holmgren has left open the possibility of returning to the sidelines to coach the Browns if needed.
Holmgren said "any and all" when he was asked if Lerner's offer included the opportunity to coach and be the team's chief executive.
The Browns are 3-11 in Mangini’s first season as the head coach, with their latest victory coming on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs 41-34.
