The legacy of Steve McNair will live on through the communities he touched over many yearsSubmitted by admin on July 9, 2009 - 4:26pm |
The legacy that quarterback Steve McNair left on the football field will stand the test of time and span all generations. McNair was easily one of the best to ever play the game of football. Sadly, with the untimely passing of McNair, there are many questions left to be answered, and the main question on everyone’s mind is why did this happen?
At this point in the investigation, the police have ruled the death of McNair as a murder-suicide, but if that is truly the case, what was Sahel Kazemi’s motive for killing him, and more importantly, what if she was purchasing a gun to protect herself from someone and that person got control of the gun?
While investigators were quick to rule the death of McNair as a murder-suicide that stemmed from a “lover’s quarrel”, the situation may not be that cut and dry. There could have easily been another person involved in the encounter that did have a legitimate motive to kill Kazemi and McNair.
The death of McNair will be surrounded by a stain of mystery, but despite that, his legacy as a football player and even more importantly, as a person, will continue to live on.
One Tennessee Titan football fan said “"I will always remember him for the good things that he did for the community and the Tennessee Titans," Lewis said. "Nobody's perfect." "Myself and my family were completely shocked and some of us were crying because you almost feel like you are related."
That is the type of legacy that McNair left, a legacy that reached far beyond the gridiron into the communities that he lived and played in. No matter what happened on the tragic night that McNair was killed, he will forever live on through the many people that he touched in many different ways.
McNair's wife, close friends and ex-teammates are expected at a memorial service Thursday night at Mount Zion Baptist Church, which the family has attended since moving to Nashville in 1997.
Steve McNair will be laid to rest Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss. The funeral will be held at the Reed Green Coliseum, University of Southern Mississippi. It begins at 11 a.m. A private burial will take place in McNair’s hometown of Mt. Olive.
