Jimmy Rollins brags Phillies will win World Series in five games

Last year, the Philadelphia Phillies shortstopper Jimmy Rollin had predicted the team would win 100 games, they ended up with 92 wins along with 11 more wins as they won the World Series last season. This week, Rollins boasts that the Phillies will take care of the New York Yankees in the 2009 World Series of Baseball in five games.

This time, Rollins, playing for back-to-back World Series titles, might be accurate with the number.

“Of course we’re going to win,” Rollins said on “The Jay Leno Show” Monday night, two days before Game 1 of the World Series. “If we’re nice we’ll let it go six (games), but I’m thinking five. Close it out at home.”

He might be bragging and most people do not appreciate that, but with the Phillies having one of the hottest bats in the postseason so far this year, Rollins has a point.

In nine post season games, they’ve only dropped two losses, both close games to the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers. But looking at their wins and scoring against both teams, the Phillies out scored both teams 20-15 (Colorado) and 35-15 (Los Angeles)

The Dodgers were rated to go as far as the World Series, but the Phillies cut down those wings and a possible Joe Torre against his old team the Yankees.

Rollins knows his team has great pitching with a bullpen that includes Pedro Martinez, Cole Hamels, Brett Myers and Brad Lidge; a bullpen comparable to the Yankees multimillion dollar pitching staff, but their offense with Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino is what gives Rollins the audacity to make that claim.

Even if the Yankees look out for Howard and Werth with their hot bats, Victorino, Utley and Rollins are three players who can roast the Yankees pitching at any point in the game.

Even when the Dodgers decided to walk Howard six times, the NLCS MVP, still intimidated Torre’s team, and these are some of the things that gives Rollins the confidence they can repeat as World Series champions.

Though his team mates are used to Rollins making such declaration, the Yankees are not impressed by the comments which they should.

“He’s been Nostradamus, that’s what I heard,” Yankees catcher Jorge Posada said. “He’s been (making) a lot of good predictions, so we’ve got to take that away from him.”

If everyone else on the Yankees organization does not take Rollins serious, at least Posada does. Earlier this season, Rollins mentioned that the Phillies would be back in the World Series, but this time playing the Yankees, I think he does know what he is talking about.

“That’s just Jimmy,” Howard said. “He loves that spotlight. He loves putting that type of—I guess I don’t want to say pressure — but just putting that kind of attention on himself and on our team. Obviously, with those comments, you know here in Yankee Stadium, you know they’re going to be all over him. And you know what? He wants that. He relishes that moment.”
